A Historic Day as Ground Is Broken for Walker County Centennial Park

It was a hot day in Jasper as Willie Moore III, standing in the sun, pushed up his browline glasses and revealed a grin.

Representing the Jasper City Council, Moore was participating in the official groundbreaking for Walker County Centennial Park, one of six community parks to be built by United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) in each of the six counties the organization serves. The parks project is in celebration of UWCA’s 100th anniversary and is a “thank you” for each community’s support through the years.

Celebrating Those Who Make a Difference — National Volunteer Week 2024

Since 2021, the first year that DeOnia Gibby was on the Golden Bears Softball Team at Miles College, she has been finding ways to be a force for good. At the beginning of that softball season, the Montgomery native organized a backpack and supply drive for Robinson Primary School in Fairfield. Gibby, along with her teammates, donated about 30 backpacks full of supplies for the K through 2nd students.

Second of Six Centennial Parks Reaches Completion

Stephen’s Park in Montevallo just became an even greater asset to the community, thanks to United Way of Central Alabama’s Centennial Parks initiative. With a new outdoor pavilion for classrooms and gatherings, two pickleball courts, and additional shade trees, the park’s enhancements were celebrated during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local leaders, United Way staff, and partner agencies. This marks the second of six Centennial Parks being built to honor 100 years of United Way’s service across Central Alabama.

Second Centennial Park Breaks Ground

United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA), in partnership with the City of Montevallo, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at Stephen’s Park in Montevallo on August 29th as construction will soon begin on the second of six community parks commemorating UWCA’s 100-year legacy.

“United Way of Central Alabama turned 100 this year, and while we were planning what this year should look like, we asked ourselves, ‘What can we do to thank all these communities that have supported us?’” said Drew Langloh, President and CEO of UWCA. “We decided on parks that would bring communities together, and we decided to build these community parks in the ‘United Way-way,’ which is through service and volunteering.”
